Research Context

Research Overview

Bacteriostatic Water is sterile, non-pyrogenic water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. The preservative inhibits microbial growth, allowing a sealed multi-dose vial to be entered repeatedly under aseptic technique rather than discarded after a single withdrawal — the property that distinguishes it from unpreserved Sterile Water for Injection USP.

In laboratory work it is used as a diluent to bring lyophilized material into solution at a defined concentration. The volume added determines that concentration: 2 mL introduced to a 5 mg vial yields a 2.5 mg/mL solution.

Supplied in a sealed multi-dose glass vial with a tamper-evident seal and lot-numbered label, manufactured to USP monograph standards. Benzyl alcohol is not compatible with every preparation; suitability should be confirmed against the protocol in use.

For laboratory and in-vitro research use only. Not for human or veterinary use. Not FDA approved.
