Epithalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, representing a synthetic analog of Epithalamin, a natural polypeptide isolated from the pineal gland. CAS 307297-39-8, molecular formula C₁₄H₂₂N₄O₉, molecular weight 390.35 g/mol. It was first characterized by Vladimir Khavinson and colleagues at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology.
Epithalon has been studied primarily in the context of telomere biology and cellular aging research. In vitro studies have investigated its effects on telomerase enzyme activity in somatic cell lines, with particular interest in its interactions with the catalytic subunit of telomerase (hTERT). Additional research applications include studies of pineal gland biology, melatonin regulation in cell culture models, antioxidant pathway characterization, and comparative biogerontology.
